Building new community leadership skills are the focus of an upcoming series of four inspirational speakers and workshops in Mission on the last Saturday of the month from January through April.

Do you want to learn more about leadership and how to make a difference in your community? Then the building community leadership series is for you.

Mission has a limited group of volunteers who are active in community leadership roles. This new initiative aims to identify, train and connect confident community leaders. The series is a pilot project intended to create a template for small B.C. communities to build an ongoing base of volunteers for future growth and community development.

Individuals or organizations can register for any one or all four of the sessions offered in the leadership series. Each session costs $20 or $75 for four. There are also opportunities to sponsor the leadership project. To date the University of the Fraser Valley and Mission Community Foundation are supporting the series.

The first session — featuring inspirational speaker Spencer West, and a workshop by Me to We — will focus on developing leadership passion. The day begins at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 28 at the Clarke Theatre.

West speaks candidly about the struggles he overcame after losing his legs at five years old. His thought-provoking message inspires people to find opportunity in challenge. The customized workshop will build skills such as public speaking, consensus building and action planning.

The next session, Feb. 28, will address on the power of influence. Build on skills learned in session one by learning how to influence others to their potential. Workshop facilitator Christine McLeod, of Impact People Practices, will walk through the process in the “Leader Within.”
