Mission CUPE local ratifies agreement

New contract talks with local 593 will start later this year

Mission's support staff union is one of nine province-wide to have ratified a two-year collective agreement with the B.C. Public School Employers' Association (BCPSEA).

CUPE local 593 reached the negotiated net-zero agreement this week with BCPSEA, the accredited bargaining agent for the province's 60 public boards of education and union bargaining teams representing K-12 support staff.

The Mission membership voted March 15 by "a solid majority" to accept the deal, said local president George Forsythe.

The agreement is retroactive, he said, as the organization has been working without a contract since 2010.

"We're pleased we were able to reach an agreement," he said. "We were able to bargain without making any concessions."

The groups gather again shortly after June 30 this year to start working on the next contract.

This latest number of ratifications brings the total to 40, covering 18,300 employees across B.C.
