Celebrate Family Literacy Day at Riot of Reading

It doesn’t have to be a chore to help your young child on their path to unlocking the keys to reading. In fact, it can be fun.

That’s the message of this year’s annual Canada-wide celebration of Family Literacy Day Saturday, Jan. 26. This year’s theme is 15 Minutes of Fun and celebrates the many ways parents can stimulate learning while enjoying time with their kids.

Research shows that parents are the first and best literacy leaders for children, but don’t let that scare you. Research also shows that all that parental support is best when it comes in the form of play and is incorporated into daily life.

Family Literacy Day will by marked with the 11th annual Riot of Reading Solutions on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ecole Mission Central, 7466 Welton St.

“Literacy is more than reading and writing,” says Riot organizer Elspeth Bowers. “It is how families get things done.”

Paul Horn will be master of ceremonies and there will be entertainment throughout the day, including Norden the Magician at 1:30 p.m. Neon the Clown along with other entertainers and local dancers will also take to the stage.

There will be plenty of chances to stimulate the imagination including storytelling, crafts, and a toy play area. Local organizations and businesses will also be on hand to share their literacy knowledge and resources at more than 20 information tables. The event is free and pizza will be served just before noon along with a celebratory cake at 1 p.m.
