Twelve Mission athletes took home medals at the 2022 BC Summer Games in Prince George, which ran last weekend, from July 21 to July 24.

They contributed to a total of 105 medals won by the Fraser Valley team, which placed third overall out of eight regions, behind Vancouver Island and Vancouver Coastal.

“It was amazing,” said Tom Nguyen, principal of Fraserview Learning Centre and former president of the Mission Soccer Club. “Our zone demonstrated really great sportsmanship, and really represented the philosophy of the BC Summer Games.”

The boys soccer team taking gold by beating Vancouver Coastal’s team was a standout moment for Nguyen – his son plays on the team. The Fraser Valley squad scored the first goal in the 80th minute, Vancouver tied it with one minute left, before the game was decided in penalty kicks.

Nguyen said the team’s coach had battled back from cancer a year previous, and the players bonded well with him.

Mission’s gold medal winners were Marleigh Mitchell for girls softball; Paul Potma and Matthew Burns for the swimming Special Olympics team; and Isaiah Falk and Kieran Nguyen for boys soccer team.

Silver medal winners were Brenden Hooper, Gunner Leifsson and Kade Leifsson for the box lacrosse team; and Adia Irvine-Roberts for the canoe/kayak event.

Bronze medals were won by Carla Olson, Evangeline Olson and Annika Lawrence for the girls volleyball team.

In total the Fraser Valley won 34 golds, 30 silvers and 41 bronzes.
