Mission schools closed again on Thursday
Schools have been closed once again in Mission today due to slippery streets and roads.
"Inaccessible and unserviceable bus routes, lack of safe walkways, problematic wind chill factors and no forecast change in the existing weather pattern for today have necessitated the closure," reads the Mission Public Schools' website.
As well, Riverside evening classes have been cancelled.
"We understand these decisions have an impact on our families and appreciate your patience during these severe weather situations. While we know that our students and families are best served when we are open, our top concern is the safety of our students and staff," said Frank Dunham, superintendent of schools on Tuesday.
A winter storm watch has been issued for the Fraser Valley with an Arctic outflow of cold wind and snowfall. Temperatures are expected to be -10 C with the wind chill this afternoon, with scattered flurries into the evening.
The forecast calls for 1-3 cm of snow with freezing rain, so roads could become even more dangerous than they are now.
All buses in Mission are running normally, according to Central Transit's website, with the exception of Bus 34, which will follow its regular route outbound but will not travel James or Alder Streets, which remain closed. It will be continuing inbound via Stave Lake Road to the Exchange.
Handy Dart is providing regular service.
All Abbotsford buses are running on major thoroughfares.
Curbside collection has also been postponed for today, due to frozen airlines on collection equipment. The district's website indicated workers will try and collect recyclables and compost, but may not be able to service all areas.
Garbage, recyclables and compost from today’s missed collection will be collected next week, with garbage being accepted at twice the weekly limit. Extra garbage resulting from today’s missed collection can be set out in bags, rather than bins.
