Thieves target elderly residents
Thieves posing as stranded motorists have been robbing elderly victims in the Mission and Chilliwack areas, and possibly other parts of the Fraser Valley.
At least five similar cases have been reported to police in the last two months and Mounties believe the crime is being committed by the same suspects.
The victims range in age from 64 to more than 80 years old. All incidents happened in residential neighbourhoods, and the victim is typically approached when they are returning home, said Sgt. Shaun Wright. The suspect then approaches the victim and says they are having car troubles and asks for some water for the radiator.
The suspect often offers to help the victim carry their groceries or other items and wait at the home's entrance for the requested water.
While waiting, the suspect steals purses or wallets and flees before the victim returns.
Police believe at least one male and one female are involved in these thefts, and different descriptions have been provided for the suspect vehicle in each theft.
Police encourage the public to be cautious and keep an eye out for any suspicious activity or people hanging around their neighbourhood. Mounties also remind the public to keep their doors locked and not let strangers into their homes.
Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call Mission RCMP 604-826-7161.
