A 14-year-old Mission girl is in critical condition at B.C. Children's Hospital after being hit by a Pontiac G5 Wednesday afternoon at a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Eider Street.

According to Mission Mounties, eastbound traffic had stopped on Seventh Avenue for the teen and the 15-year-old boy she was with, but the driver of a westbound vehicle didn't see the pair and continued through, striking the girl.

The 31-year-old driver from Abbotsford remained at the scene and was interviewed by police.

"Alcohol, drugs, speed, and weather conditions do not appear to be factors in this incident," said RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright.

A nurse on scene provided immediate medical attention until emergency personnel arrived to take her to hospital where she was put in a medically induced coma.

No charges have been laid in the incident and traffic investigators continue to piece together what happened.

Police urge both motorists and pedestrians to use caution on the roads during low light conditions.
