UPDATED: Fire destroys Mission outbuilding

Nobody was injured in a fire that destroyed an outbuilding housing a Health Canada-licensed marijuana grow operation in Silverdale Saturday morning.

The main residence, located about six feet away from the outbuilding, was not damaged, said Mission RCMP.

Mission Fire/Rescue Chief Larry Watkinson said all three fire stations were called to fight the blaze at the corner of Silverdale Avenue and Lougheed Highway. The building was fully engulfed by flames once firefighters arrived just after 2 a.m.

“It was a complex fire,” he said, “because of the electrical lines that were involved which limited access to the building.”

Mission RCMP had closed off the highway while the fire was being fought.

The fire is currently under investigation, but police believe the presence of a marijuana grow operation is a contributing factor.

"Police are looking at any possible links, but there is no indication that this incident is linked to any other recent fires in the Mission area," said Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright.
