Mission student heads to provincial heritage fair

Hatzic Elementary School student Keanna Peters will be competing in the Provincial Heritage Fair next month.

Peters' project on "My Bannock Family" is one of 60 entries that will be on display in Kamloops from June 29 to July 3.

This is the second year a heritage fair has been held in Mission and the first time a local student will be participating at the provincial level.

Peters, a Grade 5 student, won first place in the Aboriginal Culture category at the 18th annual Fraser Valley Regional Heritage Fair last month before being selected to move on to the next level this week.

Twenty-three Hatzic elementary students entered the regional event and earned five of the 25 awards given out.

"Students were judged on their project display, oral presentation and their ability to share what they have learned through the research of their chosen topic," said Cindy Rowell, Fraser Valley Regional Heritage Fair coordinator.

Other Mission students who placed first in their category are Jillian Quick for her 1948 Flood project in the Family History category; Katherine Weither for her Bush Flying project in the Transportation and Communication category; Kayden Scott for his Canadian Floods project in the Provincial Stories category; and Kota Clarkson for her Road Building in Mission project in the Life Time Learner category.

"The Regional Heritage Fair is part of a national initiative to encourage youth to celebrate Canada's history and heritage."
