Married couple Rozsa and Amrit Saggu (Saint Soldier) are holding an event on Friday to launch the video for their song Dark Shades, about domestic violence.

An Abbotsford husband-and-wife songwriting team have created a music video about domestic violence, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign.

Amrit Saggu (whose stage name is Saint Soldier) and wife Rozsa hold a release event on Friday, Jan. 25 for the video to their song Dark Shades.

The couple was approved last fall by CreativeBC for a music video grant which would match, dollar for dollar, any funds they raised, up to $10,000.

They began a Kickstarter campaign in November and raised almost $3,000 to complete the project.

The video was produced by the same film crew who participated in making previous videos for Saggu’s songs A Stray – which addresses gang violence – and Farmer Suicide.

Dark Shades tackles the challenging topic of domestic violence, and depicts a mother in an abusive marriage as she fears for her and her son’s life.

Saggu said the couple wrote the song “to spread a message of hope, self love and awareness around the realities of domestic abuse.”

The video release event starts at 7 p.m. at The Reach Gallery Museum (32388 Veterans Way), and admission is a $10 donation to SARA for Women.

SARA provides safe refuge and community-based resources for women in Mission and Abbotsford.

Those in attendance at the launch event include abuse survivors, Mayor Henry Braun, Abbotsford Police Chief Mike Serr, and representatives from Abbotsford Community Services’ specialized victims’ assistance and the Abbotsford Police’s domestic violence unit and victim services.
