Lougheed Highway was shut down in both directions at around 8 p.m. Monday evening after a Ford Explorer drove into a ditch at Chester Street.

The driver of a red Ford Explorer SUV has been airlifted to hospital from Mission Raceway Park after driving into a ditch at Lougheed Highway and Chester Street Monday at around 8 p.m.

Witnesses said the car drove off the embankment into the steep ditch, but it's unknown as to why the accident occurred.

Emergency crews used a ladder to get past thorny bushes to rescue the driver after shutting down traffic in both directions and diverting it along Silverdale Avenue.

The driver has not been identified by the RCMP other than he is a 64-year-old man from Harrison Hot Springs. The nature or seriousness of his injuries has not been disclosed.

More details as they become available.
