A Mission man will spend 30 months behind bars for his involvement in two separate assaults.

Michael Jared Johnson appeared in Abbotsford Provincial Court on Wednesday and was sentenced to 49.5 months, with 19.5 months taken off for time served.

Johnson was charged with aggravated assault and robbery stemming from an incident that took place March 30, 2016 in the 33800 block of Dlugosh Avenue in Mission.

Johnson and two other suspects – Julie Marilyn Kimber and the late Joseph Ronald Kellington (his body was found on a property on Ross Road in Abbotsford earlier this year)  – were charged after two men had been assaulted  with a crowbar and what was believed to be an axe handle.

While the injuries were serious, they were not life-threatening.

When in custody, Johnson walked up to a fellow inmate, who was sitting at a table playing cards, and poured boiling water from a kettle on the man’s back and neck resulting in a second assault charge.

Both the prosecutor and defence lawyer requested that Johnson, who entered guilty pleas in both incidents, receive a sentence of the 19.5 months time served and an additional 18 months for the first assault and another 12 months for the second charge.

Judge Edna Ritchie agreed to the terns calling Johnson’s action “horrific” and “pretty stupid quite frankly.” She told Johnson he was lucky that his victims were not more seriously injured or deceased.

Along with the 30-month sentence, Johnson must submit a DNA sample to be kept on the criminal database and has a lifetime ban on owning any firearms. The judge has recommended that he serve his time at Mission Institution.
