A bear cub was hanging out at the Coquitlam Central West Coast Express station Thursday morning.

Numerous passersby spotted the animal and noted that there was no mother in sight.

Conservation officer Sharlene Syer said that after speaking with Coquitlam RCMP, the conservation officer service chose not to attend.

“RCMP kept people away from the area till the bear was able to descend down the tree and into a ravine,” said Syer.

She wasn’t sure as to how old the cub was but noted that often when cubs are found alone, it means that they are juvenile bears and have a mother pushing them out of the den.

Syer did note that there has been a rise in bear sightings in the region.

“We’ve had an increase in bear calls and sightings in the cities,” said Syer. “It’s not uncommon.”
