Charges have now been laid after a seven-year-old boy who was allegedly abducted by his mother was located in Abbotsford and returned to his father in Langley.

Cpl. Holly Largy with the Langley RCMP said police received a report on July 18 that the boy had not been returned to his father as planned that morning.

“What began as a check-on-the-well-being investigation soon became a missing-person investigation, and just as quickly officers determined they were looking at a parental abduction,” Largy said.

She said, with the assistance of plainclothes officers, investigators located the mother, 47, at a residence on Peardonville Road in Abbotsford on Saturday, July 25.

Langley RCMP and the Abbotsford Police Department then tried to arrest the mom.

“Police encountered significant resistance from a male occupant in the residence, elevating the risk factors for all involved,” Largy said. “Police took appropriate actions to defuse the situation and reduce the risk to the young boy and everyone involved.”

Two days later, the Integrated Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team entered the residence with warrants and arrested the mother and her 49-year-old partner.

“The boy was found safe during a search of the residence,” Largy said. “He was very happy to be reunited with his father.”

Charges have now been laid, according to the provincial court database.

Ian Michael Broderick has been charged with unlawful confinement and resisting a peace officer. Anick Eunice Emmerich is charged with abduction, unlawful confinement and resisting a peace officer.

Both are next due in Abbotsford provincial court on Aug. 24.
