Driver of pick-up truck administered first aid until help arrived

An elderly man died on Saturday morning, after being struck by a vehicle in Chilliwack.

The 78-year-old was riding a bicycle at Cheam Ave. and Young Rd., when he was hit at about 10:30 a.m. Cpl. Mike Rail of the Chilliwack RCMP said that the 26 year-old driver of the pick-up truck who hit him stopped immediately to help.

“The driver of the vehicle did stop and administered first aid until BC Paramedics arrived,” Rail confirmed.

The Chilliwack Fire Department also responded, and the incident occured directly beside their fire hall. RCMP arrived shortly after and blocked off traffic flow in the southbound lane for several hours.

The man’s body was on scene for several hours as RCMP awaited the coroner. The body was only partially covered by a a a white blanket for those hours, and the standard yellow tarp used in fatalities was not used. A purple bicycle sat at the side of the road by the incident, clearly damaged in the crash.
