PROFILE: Bernadine Babuik, trustee

I am a long-time Mission resident. I graduated from Mission Secondary School and we raised our three children here.
I worked for 34 years with Mission School District, 17 of those years as the board of education’s assistant. Because I have been privileged to work with many elected boards, I have significant experience and knowledge about the School Act, the role of boards of education, and how they should operate.
I am a Canadian Registered Safety Professional, and in the fall of 2007 I began work with Nanaimo school district as manager for the occupational health and safety program.
I am now a health and safety consultant.
I believe in public education, open and accountable governance, and that if decisions are defensible, then they must be made and defended in public meetings.
I believe that given limited funding, decisions on how to allocate dollars must focus on students in the classroom.
