An inmate at Mission Institution was found dead in his cell today (May 15)
Staff members found inmate Michael John Butcher unresponsive this morning and immediately began performing CPR. Emergency services were also called. Despite the efforts, Butcher could not be resuscitated.
At the time of his death, 34, had been serving a 15 year sentence for robbery, obstructing a peace officer and assault causing bodily harm, since October 10, 2009.
The inmates next of kin have been notified.
As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the coroner have been notified, and Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the incident.
