A portion of Second Avenue has been closed off after a man barricaded himself inside a house.

A man has turned himself in following a standoff on Second Avenue in which it was believed he had barricaded himself into a home on the south side of the 33400 block of Second Avenue.

Staff Sgt. Konrad Golbeck said Mission RCMP responded to a complaint of a sexual assault early Tuesday morning and cordoned off an area where the suspect was last seen running into a home.

The Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called in to assist with the Mission RCMP and a police negotiator became involved as well. As it turns out, however, the man was not in the home when police finally received legal permission to breach the door about five hours into the standoff.

The suspect turned himself in to police without incident about an hour later, said Golbeck.

The man is well-known to police, which led them to believe he could be armed and dangerous.

"Because of safety concerns because of the public, a decision was made to use the ERT," he said.

Police have not yet released the name of the man.
