Mission firefighters were called out to a mobile home blaze on Wilson Street, about a kilometre away from the Ruskin Dam, on Monday night.

The call came in just after 6 p.m.

When fire crews arrived they discovered a mobile home and a shed ablaze.

“It started in a shed out back of one of the mobile homes and spread to the mobile home itself by the time we arrived on scene,” said Mission fire chief Dale Unrau.

He said crews made a quick initial attack and were able to confine the fire to the shed and the part of the trailer that was involved.

“It was a good save.”

No injuries were reported from the incident as the occupants, their dog and all of the firefighters were unharmed.

Unrau said the homeowner are “fortunately” insured.

“It received extensive damage. It will be up to the insurance company to decide whether they will be able to restore it or whether they will need to replace the whole structure.”

Unrau said the fire is “not at all suspicious” and believes the cause looks to be from spontaneous combustion from oily rags.

“Just a reminder to everyone, if you are finishing items with either linseed oil, or other products like that, to make sure that you dispose of the rag into a non-flammable container.”

BC wildfires:

While much of the province is battling wildfires, Unrau said the Mission department has yet to be called on for assistance.

“We have provided a list of resources that we would make available to the province if they need us, but we have not been requested for any services at this time,” said Unrau.

However, four Emergency Support Services personnel from Mission have been deployed to Kamloops to help out there.
