Discarded smoking material is believed to be the cause of a house fire on Charnley Drive in Mission on Thursday (Aug. 3) afternoon.
At about 3:30 p.m. Mission Fire Rescue Service received a call about a structure fire in the area.
When crews arrived, there was a “significant fire” on the outside of the house, said assistant fire chief Norm MacLeod.
“It was on the rear of the house, you couldn’t really see the damage from the road.”
A lone occupant was home at the time and smelled smoke. When she investigated, she saw the fire and called for help.
About 16 firefighters and four pieces of apparatus were on scene to battle the blaze.
“The fire was knocked down quickly by the crews. They did a good job identifying where the fire was,” said MacLeod.
Te blaze extended up into the ceiling, which required some overhaul by firefighters.
MacLeod said their was “extensive damage to the rear of the building” and the fire was “likely due to smoking materials.”
The female occupant suffered burns on her fingers from trying to extinguish the blaze and some smoke inhalation. She was taken to hospital.
