Mission Institution is locked down following a trio of incidents during the weekend.

An inmate assault in the gymnasium Friday started the series of events, said Jonathan Ratzlaff, acting assistant warden of management services. The institution was locked down at that point, but restrictions were lifted by Saturday afternoon.

However, after a "suspicious" fire in a cell and another inmate assault, officials again locked down the prison.

Staff are searching cells for unauthorized items, and Ratzlaff said this will take  a few days. The institution will return to normal routine once management determines that it is safe.

Mission Institution is a federal medium-security institution located just north of the City of Mission. The institution currently houses 270 inmates.
