The arena at Matsqui Recreation Centre has re-opened after being closed for more than three weeks due to ammonia concerns with the facility’s ice plant.

The arena was closed in early February after Technical Safety BC ordered two ice-making components be removed, citing concerns they could fail and accidentally release ammonia.

It had been discovered that ammonia had been leaking within the closed system, although the city says no ammonia was never released into the air and no people were exposed.

The report came after Technical Safety BC issued an order requiring testing of public ammonia refrigeration plants. That order followed the deaths of three workers after an ammonia leak in a Fernie arena last fall.

The arena re-opened Wednesday, the city says.
