Mission seniors could get a larger seniors centre.

The District of Mission and the Mission Association for Seniors Housing (MASH) are working together with the Seniors Centre Association on a plan to build affordable housing for seniors in Mission and a much-needed community centre.

The District and MASH have agreed to work together to design, secure funding and construct a combined affordable seniors housing and community centre project.

The District of Mission will contribute land and approximately $2.5 million in funding towards the project, with MASH providing project management and operating the housing component of the facility once it is built.

MASH is a nonprofit society that, in cooperation with other organizations, provides and encourages the development of affordable and accessible seniors housing. MASH is an association made up of member associations with a strong record of bringing affordable housing projects to market.

“We have the opportunity here to address some very pressing needs in our community, providing much-needed affordable housing for seniors alongside programmable community centre space,” said Mayor Randy Hawes in a press release.

“As the new space comes online and frees up the current Seniors Activity Centre we will have an excellent opportunity to support improved quality of life for all generations of Mission residents.“

Judith Ray, on behalf of MASH, said “With lengthy waitlists for existing seniors housing, we look forward to working in partnership to increase affordable housing units. This will enable seniors to have safe stable housing in Mission, continue to participate in community life, and benefit the community with the volunteer support they provide in the lives of all age groups.”

District staff are currently reviewing potential funding sources including grants and partnerships for the $2.5 million committed by council for this initiative.
