FRIESEN; Dorothy Darlene

1932 ~ 2016

Dorothy Darlene Friesen (nee Loewen) passed away peacefully on September 9, 2016 at the age of 84. She was predeceased by her husband of forty-eight years, Henry Kenneth Friesen, parents Frank and Martha Loewen, sisters Joyce and Nettie (Art). Dorothy will be remembered by many because her life was so much a part of the changing life of Abbotsford. She had fond memories of her parents' strawberry farm on Clearbrook Road, playing scrub softball with her brother Jerry, and singing with her sister Nettie at the Church of the Nazarene. One of the first basketball cheerleaders for the Philip Sheffield High, she was also the last young woman to be crowned Abbotsford's Harvest Queen. Long-time Abbotsford residents may have been fitted for shoes by Dorothy at Copps' Shoe Store, or checked out a book from her at the Fraser Valley Library. Dorothy was the first admitting clerk at the M.S.A. Hospital, where her compassion made a difference to so many. With her husband Ken, Dorothy raised a son, Dwight and two daughters, Celine (John) and Val (Dave) who are forever grateful for her grace and kindness. Her grandchildren Russell, Spencer (Shawn), Alexa (Chris) and Aisa were always a source of pride and delight to Dorothy. She is also survived by her loving brother Jerry (Val), and many caring nieces and nephews. In her later years Dorothy showed great strength in coping with vision loss, cancer and other health issues. She rose above these challenges and continued to be a caring friend, mother and grandmother. The Friesen/Cripps/Dobie families wish to thank many who provided care and comfort for Dorothy over the years. In accordance with her wishes, a graveside ceremony for immediate family only will be held in Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated. Online condolences can be left at: www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com
