Nicholas (Nick) Thiessen

1922 - 2010

Nick Thiessen passed away April 24, 2010 at the age of 87. He was born in Neu Samara, Russia to Nicholai Thiessen and Magdalena Epp. After his mother's death, his father married Justina Bergen. In 1926 the family immigrated to Canada and after several years in Grunthal, Manitoba settled in Coaldale, Alberta. During the war, Nick served with the Canadian Forces Medical Corp. In 1946 he married Mary Froese. Together they farmed in Vauxhall and later in DeBolt, Alberta, raising five children as well as caring for foster children. Nick actively participated with the community, the Crooked Creek Mennonite Brethren Church and later the Debolt Gospel Light Church. In addition to farming he worked in the DeBolt store, drove school bus, and at age 50 trained as a nursing orderly. He worked at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Grande Prairie until retirement. His faith was intrinsic to all aspects of his life. His passions included music, reading, learning, story telling, travelling and making friends with people of diverse backgrounds. He immensely enjoyed opportunities for service to others. In 1994, he and Mary moved to Chilliwack, BC where they enjoyed the fellowship of neighbours and friends at the Greendale Mennonite Brethren Church. Nick is lovingly remembered by his wife Mary, children; Stephen Thiessen (Vange), Victor Thiessen (Judy), Violet Chappel (Rick), Janice Thiessen (Owen), Edward Thiessen (Anne); thirteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four sisters, three brothers and many friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday April 30th at the Greendale Mennonite Brethren Church, 6550 Sumas Prairie Rd. Chilliwack.
