MARTIN, Roy Everett

Roy Everett Martin passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Abbotsford Hospital on July 28, 2009. Roy was born in Cut Knife, SK on February 19, 1922. Roy grew up in the farming community near Cut Knife and worked most of his life in the prairies, excelling at one of his many gifts, that of being a phenomenal Salesman and Sales Manager. His specialty was selling and servicing sewing machines. He was also very proud to have served Canada overseas in WWII, as a cook with a Mash unit. Roy and Kathleen (Bowler) were married on April 24, 1943. They both loved children. When their own 6 were grown and gone from home, they fostered several Native families in Winnipeg. One of his heart's desires was to live in Alberta, where they moved after his retirement. Near Caroline, they were dormitory parents at a Bible College, again mentoring young people. They moved to Red Deer in the late 80's. Roy was predeceased by the love of his life, Kathleen in 1991. His parents, Tom and Essie Martin, his older brother, Elmer and his granddaughter Leanne, have all gone on before him. He is survived by his six children, Don (Johanna), Allan (Sharron), Janet (Gerry) Leipert, Bill (Maria), Karen (William) Powell, and Kevin (Dee); 20 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; siblings Edgar (Olga), Lily Meyers, David (Doreen); sister-in-law Margaret, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A viewing will be on Thursday, August 13 from 7-9 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd, Abbotsford. A Memorial Service and reception will be held on Friday, August 14 at 2:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home. Following cremation, Roy will be laid to rest with Kathleen in Red Deer, AB on Monday, August 17th at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mercy Ministries
