LETTER: Right of way is granted, it’s not taken

People obviously don’t know that merging does not mean force your way onto the highway

I was saddened and very sorry to hear of the death of a fellow motorcycle rider recently on Mission Bridge. Our roads are a dangerous place to be.

I was very surprised therefore in your webt@lk section to read letters from the ladies who complained that motorists crossing the bridge on the main highway wouldn’t move over to “let them in” and complaining that they “had to brake” or that they had to “honk (at an idiot?)” who wouldn’t move over.

These people obviously don’t know that merging does not mean force your way onto the highway and expect others to yield. It is actually they who should yield to the traffic on the main highway.

There may also be a reason that drivers on the main highway don’t move to the left to “let them in.”

Perhaps they have traffic on their left and cannot, therefore, simply move over to accommodate those who feel entitled to barge their way in! Remember: Right of way is something granted, not something to be taken.
