Some of Mission’s best young athletes are set to compete starting today (Friday) at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.

Locals representing Team B.C. at the event include: track and field star Bryce MacKenzie, rower McKenna Simpson, swimmers Sheigh-ann Gaudette and Haley Klenk and wrestlers Alexia and Victoria Seal.

MacKenzie, a Mission Secondary student, is coming off an excellent high school track and field season that saw him win three medals at the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships in June. He earned gold in the senior boys high jump, and silvers in triple jump and long jump.

He also earned a bronze medal in high jump, competing against men at the Harry Jerome International Track Classic on June 29.

Simpson, who starts on the University of Victoria Vikes rowing team, was named the Vikes female athlete of the month in March. She earned a second-place finish in pairs at the Elk Lake Spring Regatta on March 5 before stroking the Varsity Eight to a Brown Cup win over the UBC Thunderbirds on March 26.

She was also nominated for female rookie of the year for the school.

Gaudette and Klenk excelled at the Canadian Western Championships swim meet in Calgary in April to earn a spot on Team B.C., and join 22 other swimmers at the event.

The Seal sisters look to continue their excellent 2017 with more medals.

They dominated their respective divisions at the B.C. High School Wrestling Provincial Championships in March, and have also excelled at national and international events since.

The Games kick off on today (Friday) and run until Aug. 13 in the Manitoba capital.
