Hayden makes semis in 100 m freestyle

The Mission swimmer came third in his heat and fifth overall at the Olympics in London, England

Mission's Brent Hayden qualified for the 100-metre freestyle semi-finals after placing fifth overall in the eighth and final heat of the 2012 Olympic Games Tuesday morning.

The semis take place later today (July 31).

Hayden cleared the distance in 48.53 seconds to finish third in his heat and fifth overall. America's Nathan Adrian was the fastest qualifier with 48.19, while Gideon Louw from South Africa clocked 48.29 seconds, and Sebastiaan Verschuren of the Netherlands rang up a time of 48.37.

"I just got to race no matter what," said Hayden, the 2007 world champion and 2011 world silver medallist. "I’m holding nothing back because I made that mistake in Beijing. Tonight could be the last time I race the 100 freestyle so I have to race like it is my last race."

The men's 4x100 relay team, of which Hayden was a part, failed to qualify for the next round after a slow showing Sunday.

Semifinals start at 11:30 a.m. PST, and the finals at 12:15 p.m. PST Aug. 1. Further schedule details are available here.
