Mission’s Dayton Robertson takes a tight turn at the Hornet 100 in Agassiz.

Mission’s Dayton Robertson earned a fourth-place finish at the Hornet 100 event on June 24.

Driving the RT Motorsports Acura Integra, Robertson opened the night qualifying 14th in the 21-car field.

“We weren’t far off previous qualifying times we had done before. Everyone else just seemed a little faster. We just had our work cut out for us,” stated Robertson’s pit crew member Nigel Raman.

With the inversion that put Robertson on the pole position for the “B” heat, he wasted no time pulling to a two-second lead. Despite a caution that slowed the race late in the contest, Robertson held on for his first heat race win.

“It felt great to cross that line first. It makes me want to win even more than I did before,” Robertson said.

Once again Robertson lined up on the front row inside for the start of the 100-lap feature race. Jumping out to a early lead, the rookie comfortably controlled the pace. At lap 17, Robertson handed over the lead to Matt Ostermeier.

A red flag slowed the race at lap 29, when Dillon Gordon lost a right front wheel. After the 19 was cleared from the track, cars were reset for the restart.

At lap 50, Jocelyn Boyo went into the wall head-on, destroying the Bill McFarling-owned number 33. The restart was short-lived as an ambulance was called for stiff and sore Boyo. She was checked at Chilliwack Hospital and released later that night.

With the two red flags, the race had run past its scheduled time and race officials made the decision to cut the race distance. When they went back to racing, it would be a green-white-checker finish to the event.

The race leaders were moved to the front of the field. Top 5 were Ostermeier, Glen George, Jerry Alexander, Devon Peters and Robertson.

After three laps, the order remained the same, but in the post- race technical inspection, it was determined that Ostermeier’s car failed to meet technical requirements and was disqualified, moving everyone up one position.

“To finish behind these guys is nothing to feel bad about. They are the best cars in this class right now,” Robertson said following his fourth-place finish.

Robertson’s next event is Saturday at Agassiz Speedway in the Canada 150 Celebration event.
