The night of Aug. 1, 2003, as we drove around from Barriere to Kamloops along the Trans-Canada Highway, we were stopped in Cache Creek for gas when we heard on the radio of reports that Barriere was “gone.” It ended up not being accurate, and thankfully much better lines of communication with media and ultimately the public followed that horrifying broadcast. But it showed just how dangerous inaccurate information can be. Much of the downtown area of Barriere remained unscathed, in large part thanks to the firefighters and volunteers who stayed back and keep the hoses going round-the-clock in an effort to save the community.
