Mission Record receives two honours from Canadian Community Newspaper Awards

Editor Kevin Mills, former reporter Patrick Penner earn second, third place awards

The Mission Record has received a pair of honours from News Media Canada.

Each year the organization holds its Canadian Newspaper Association Awards, honouring high-quality journalism from newspapers across the country.

However, due to Covid restrictions, the 2020 and 2021 awards were postponed. Earlier this month, the 2020 and 2021 winners were finally announced.

The Mission Record received a second-place award in the category of Best Feature Series 2020 (circulation higher than 10,000) for a five-part series called “Inside the Mission RCMP” by editor Kevin Mills.

Mills was given a rare, inside look at the workings of the local police detachment, including a ride-along, a surveillance operation and more.

The Victoria News won first place in the category for its series called “Mental Health in Greater Victoria, while The Lake Report (Ontario) and the St. Albert Gazette (Alberta) tied for third.

In the 2021 category of Best Feature Story (circulation between 4,000 to 12,499) former reporter Patrick Penner won the Mission Record a third place honour for his story “Wake up and can’t smell the coffee.”

The story was about Dave Perritt of Grab-A-Java Coffee Roasters and his battle with the after affects of Covid-19.

First place in this category went to the Rocky Mountain Outlook (Alberta), while second place went to the Voice of Pelham (Ontario).

“These two awards are an example of the high-quality work our editorial team strives to bring our readers week after week,” said Record publisher Karen Murtagh.

“It’s always exciting to receive recognition from our industry as we continue to provide coverage of current issues and events that really impact our community.”

The Record has a long history of award-winning journalism, having been recognized both provincially and nationally in the past.
