A pair of Mission pubs are looking to expand their capacity.

14th Avenue Pub is attempting to introduce an outdoor patio for 55 patrons, while HUBco Brewing on North Railway Avenue will look to increase its capacity by 20.

At the last council meeting (June 19), the city reviewed development applications for both locations.

The outdoor patio for 14th Avenue Pub will move forward to public input after a unanimous vote from council. In an attached document, the city’s bylaw department commented on the potential issues with the addition.

“Given the business is in a residential neighbourhood, bylaws has concerns about potential noise complaints from properties nearby,” the document reads. “The pub is open until 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and until 1 a.m. Fridays and 12 a.m. Saturdays. To avoid potential complaints, we would suggest the patio be closed by 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and closed by 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.”

Bylaws also recommended that any music on the patio not exceed 45 decibels after dusk.

Mission residents will have an opportunity to provide comments in writing or via a public input session. Mailouts will also be sent to nearby properties.

Meanwhile, a public input session was held for HUBco’s application earlier in the meeting. The brewery applied to increase the seating capacity from 90 people to 110 people.

Manager of Planning Rob Publow said the business has been in operation since 2019 and there are no records of any bylaw-related complaints.

No one from the public spoke at the session and council voted unanimously to move forward.

“I think it’s tough for businesses right now when they could have more capacity, and they’re not being able to use that full capacity. So I’ll certainly support this,” Mission Mayor Paul Horn said.
