60th anniversary celebrations Sunday at Silverdale hall

Come celebrate Silverdale Community Centre and Association's 60th anniversary this Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Silverdale Hall.

The first hall opened in 1914 after local residents and volunteers donated the land and built the popular gathering place. It was used for dances, weddings, and even served as a church on weekends.

The community outgrew it by 1950 and a new one was built half a mile from the old location. That hall, which opened in 1951, has hosted many community events and special occasions, such as Steve Fonyo's run and Rick Hansen's Miles for Millions for spinal research.

That hall is still used today.

There will be snacks, cake, coffee and tea at the May 1 celebration. Everyone is invited to attend and share their memories and photos. A digital scanner will be set up to capture any pictures at the event and all the information collected will be also given to the archives.

Silverdale Hall is located at 8760 McLean St.
