The students of Centennial Park Elementary in Abbotsford brought Christmas cheer to seniors in long-term care homes thanks to a microgrant from the United Way Local Love Fund.

Parents involved with the Centennial Park Parent Advisory Council (PAC) applied through the Babich-Mill Lake “Hi Neighbour project” to connect the students with local seniors.

A total of 230 gift bags and Christmas cards were crafted and filled with care package items, then distributed to long-term care homes to bring joy to seniors who may be experiencing loneliness and isolation over the holidays.

“This initiative strengthens the fabric of our community and creates important community connections, teaching our students about caring for others and promoting well-being in their community,” said Laura Lewis, PAC president.

“The students enjoyed making the crafts and the care home staff were thrilled to receive these packages to distribute to their residents. It may seem simple, but to these residents, it can brighten their day, put a smile on their face and make a meaningful difference.”

The care packages were delivered to the Mayfair Senior Living facility as well as MSA Manor, located directly across the street from the school.

Nichole Marples, PAC treasurer and project administrator, said considerable effort was put in by PAC members to assemble and prepare the supplies for the crafts.

“The library was turned into Santa’s workshop for the week, with the students as the elves. This was truly an act of local love and really got everyone in to the true spirit of the season,” she said.
