A Taylor Swift-themed conference takes place in Abbotsford on Thursday, Dec. 5 just ahead of the singer's Eras tour stop in Vancouver.
The academic conference, titled Swiftie Scholar, takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Evered Hall at University of the Fraser Valley. It dives into the cultural impact of Swift's music while exploring the intersections of feminism, identity, and media studies through pop culture.
"This conference is more than just about her chart-topping hits; it's a space to explore how her music and persona shape and reflect larger societal themes," states a press release about the event.
Speakers at the event are:
• Erin Morton – speaking on Seeing like a Settler: Taylor's Version;
• Jarin Pintana – Dear Reader: Exploring the Intersection of Taylor Swift and the Book Publishing Industry;
• Brian Donovan – Negotiating Parasocial Relationships in the Swiftie Fandom; and
• Tinca Lukan – Unveiling the Girl Boss Sexual Contract: Multimodal Discourse Analysis of Texts From and About Taylor Swift.
The conference can be attended either in person or virtually. Tickets are $13 (plus service fees) and can be purchased at swiftiescholar.com.
Swift comes to Vancouver for three concerts on Dec. 6, 7 and 8.
