Clifford the Big Red Dog will be making an appearance at this Saturday's Riot of Reading Solutions.

Just 15 minutes a day of reading with a child can set the child on a lifelong road to joyful reading.

That’s the message of this year’s national Family Literacy Day organizers who have made a list of 15 possible ways for parents to support early literacy, including everything from telling a few knock-knock jokes to making a family tree.

This year’s Riot of Reading Solutions, the local celebration of the national Family Literacy Day, will be held Saturday, Jan. 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ecole Mission Central (7466 Welton Street.)

“It’s going to be another riot of excitement and reading,” said Riot of Reading Solutions organizer Elspeth Bowers in a press release.

There will be plenty of fun. Norden the Magician will weave his magic and there will be many opportunities to get up and dance with Tribal Fusion and the Dasmesh School Bhangra Dancers. A group of international students from China will give a taste of the arts from their country, and people will have a chance to join in some Powwow Drumming with Holly Gallant and friends.

Master of Ceremony Paul Horn will weave his storytelling magic and word wizardry. Kids can have their face painted, get a balloon animal from Neon the Clown, adopt a rare word, write a Mad Lib Haiku, or meet their book heroes Clifford the Big Red Dog and Geronimo Stilton.

For those seeking information on local literacy initiatives and resources, there will also be information tables by local organizations and businesses that promote literacy and support families in Mission.

The event is free and pizza will be served at noon along with a celebratory cake at 2 p.m.
