A memorial to honour the 215 children whose remains were recently found at the former Kamloops residential school has been set up at Matsqui Community Hall in Abbotsford.
The memorial consists of 215 orange ribbons that outline a heart along the fence at the hall.
Residents of the community created the memorial over the weekend.
“We want the First Nations community to know that we feel their grief. This memorial is a symbol of the community support, not only for the missing children, but also for the survivors of residential schools,” said Cindy Rowell, president of Matsqui Community Hall.
The community is encouraged to show their support by placing teddy bears or children’s shoes at the memorial. The hall is located at 33676 St Olaf Ave.
