Mission’s ninth annual Heritage Week celebrates communications Feb. 20-27.
The week kicks off with the Pioneer Social at Cedarbrooke Chateau Feb. 20 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. This event is open to all early settlers and First Nations people of the area, and their families. Everyone is welcome to enjoy refreshments, entertainment and meet old friends and acquaintances. All Heritage Week events are free to the public.
Mission Museum is hosting a new exhibit, the Evolution of Communications, while the Mission Community Archives will feature a display on the municipality’s communication heritage. A new exhibit will be launched by Heritage Places on Feb. 21.
Local organizations have been invited to participate with the week’s highlights including popular artwork from Mission’s three secondary schools which will again be displayed in First Avenue store fronts. This year’s theme of Heritage of Communications is based on Mission’s history of communications, and will be portrayed in students’ artistic efforts.
Other participants include Mission Genealogy Club’s heritage family memorabilia display and an open house on Feb. 20 at the Mission Library and the Mission Indian Friendship Centre where culture and traditions will be shared.
Events will wrap up with a Heritage Tea at Norma Kenney House at Fraser River Heritage Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring an item related to the theme for a show and tell and to enjoy afternoon tea and scones with homemade jam.
