A total of $255,000 in scholarships and bursaries were awarded to Grade 12 students and adult post-secondary learners last week.

The Mission Community Foundation held its annual Scholarship and Bursary Awards Ceremony on May 22 at the Clarke Theatre and the $255,000 marked the highest amount distributed by the foundation to date.

Awards were presented to students entering a wide range of academic and vocational fields. Recipients were selected based on various criteria, including academic performance, financial need, and community involvement.

The evening also included the presentation of the G.W. Cooke Awards. The George Willoughby Cooke Awards Fund was established in 1992 by Bill and Shirley Walker of Mission and is managed by the foundation. Its purpose is to recognize students in Grades 7, 8 and 9 from our school district for achievement in Math and Science. Recognition medallions and certificates are provided to the recipients.

Scholarships, bursaries, and academic awards were made possible through contributions from individual donors, families, businesses, and community groups. The funds support students from the Mission area in pursuing education at various levels.

The Mission Community Foundation has administered scholarship and bursary programs for local students since its establishment. The annual awards ceremony is held to recognize recipients and acknowledge the support of donors.
