A new Mountie will be patrolling the streets of Mission. ‘Constable Scarecrow’, a life-sized cut-out of a police officer, is the Mission RCMP Traffic Unit’s latest asset. The cut-out will be used around the city to encourage speeding drivers to slow down.

“Road safety is one of Mission RCMP’s priorities,” said Inspector Ted Lewko, Mission RCMP Officer-in-Charge in a statement. “The Constable Scarecrow initiative focuses on deterring speeding, which can result in collisions causing serious injury or death.”

Constable Scarecrow has brothers at other RCMP detachments in BC as part of an initiative launched in 2018 to combat speeding.

“When it comes to public safety, we know that Mission expects us to bring creativity to the table,” said Mayor Paul Horn in a news release. “Constable Scarecrow is a very inexpensive resource, but he has proven effective in other communities, so we are excited to welcome him to the RCMP here in Mission.”

Speed readers will accompany the cut-out at Mission locations throughout the coming weeks.
