Mission residents will have an opportunity to support the Ukraine with a candlelight vigil slated for later this month.

The Prayers for the Dead event will take place Feb. 19 at the Ukranian Cultural Centre on 33059 Dewdney Trunk Rd at 6p.m.

Ukranian Cultural Centre executive director Dustin Hiles is hoping to have over 100 people come out for the vigil.

“I wanted to bring our community together to mourn with the Ukrainian families who are here who have been displaced,” Hiles said. “[We want to show] that we can support them, and that they can feel that they’re part of a community now.”

Ihor Lubomyr Huculak, the honorary Ukranian consul to BC, will be a guest speaker at the event with other special guests expected to honour the victims of the war.

“I think it’s important that we as a community come together to support those who have suffered,” Hiles said.

Donations will be accepted at the event with a Ukrainian dinner also planned for March.
