Mission vigil raises awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women

Speakers, songs and stories featured in annual event at Fraser River Heritage Park

Fraser River Heritage Park in Mission hosted an annual Candlelight Vigil on Friday (Oct. 4) to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people. 

The vigil took place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. with chilli and bannock provided to those in attendance. 

The event also featured eight speakers, songs, stories and hanging posters for lost and stolen loved ones. 

Tim Gray from Sq'éwlets First Nation was the featured speaker at the vigil, with Dan Williams, Patrick Kelly, Garret Dan, Lyn Kay, Sarah Gray, Phyllis Starblanket and Peggy Peters also speaking. 

The event received support this year from Shx:wōw’hamel First Nation and First Nation Health Authority.
