Street hockey was among the popular attractions for kids at Jumpstart Day on Saturday at Mission's Canadian Tire.

The sixth annual Jumpstart Day drew crowds to Mission's Canadian Tire on Saturday to participate in a wide variety of family-oriented activities.

The event was in celebration of the Jumpstart Red Ball campaign, which, through the month of May, encouraged customers to donate $2 in exchange for a red ball – a national symbol for child’s play. The local festivities included a bouncy castle, basketball shooting contest, street hockey area, face painting, free bike tune-ups, and a draw for a barbecue.

"We had a lot of support," said store manager Casey Jones. "It was very busy, outside and inside.

"It was just like it is every year – a pretty good celebration."

Jumpstart is a charitable initiative that provides financial assistance for families who can't afford to enrol their kids in organized sport, and has helped more than 730,000 kids in the past nine years. One hundred per cent of every donation stays in the community in which it was made.

Jones said his staff really gets behind Jumpstart fundraising, including the Red Ball campaign and Jumpstart Day.

"We usually have a little competition between cashiers to see who can get the most (Red Ball) donations, and they have a lot of fun with it," he said. "We had a lot of our staff volunteer on their days off to help with (Jumpstart Day) setup and takedown. They love it."
