More than 100 people attended the official opening of the new St. Joseph Food Bank building in Mission last year.

The new St. Joseph’s Food Bank is now open and fully functional.

Ron Leger, a local accountant and volunteer leader at the food bank since 1996, said the opening celebration of the new building, which took place last October, was done while awaiting completion of some required interior needs.

As of Thursday, April 21, St. Joseph’s Food Bank is ready to serve as a fully functional food distribution centre for those in need in Mission.

“This is another important step forward; community helping community,” said Leger, adding the next steps include further fundraising towards the purchase of a walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer to increase capacity to receive product for distribution and sharing.

Leger said he’s hopeful donations will soon make this possible, adding that Mission has been most supportive of the food bank with broad-based community support, fundraising initiatives and corporate support to help them meet real needs.

“This is another time to say thanks to all the volunteers and those who donate and support St. Joseph’s Food Bank,” said Leger.

St. Joseph’s is located at 32550 7th Ave. in Mission on St. Joseph’s Parish Church Property. The food bank is open at 9 a.m. on the first and third Thursdays of every month.
