Seniors’ Week in Mission runs June 5-11

Official opening ceremony for seniors’ centre will kick off events one day early

In October 2002 a proclamation was declared in perpetuity that the first week of June every year shall be known as Seniors’ Week.

This is a time to celebrate seniors and their many contributions – providing an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the integral part seniors play in communities across B.C.

This year Seniors’ Week runs June 5-11, 2022 and local organizers have put together an exciting line up of activities to help celebrate in Mission.

The celebration begins one day early as, on June 4 at 10 a.m., the Boswyk Seniors Activity Centre will finally hold it’s official opening ceremony.

The centre opened last year, on June 4, but less than two months later was closed due to Covid-19 restrictions. After about five months, the centre slowly re-opened.

“We still have a few teething problems, but it’s nice to finally get it going and have an official opening,” said Jim Hinds, a member of the centre’s board of directors.

While the opening may have been delayed by Covid, it hasn’t stopped the centre’s membership from growing.

“We’ve seen the seniors centre double in the amount of membership. We went from about 240 to over 550 members now and still growing,” said Hinds.

The new centre has allowed for more activities as well. Hinds noted that the old centre had one main room and now there are five rooms to host programs and events, including a billiards room with three professional tables.

“We are hoping to hold tournaments with other senior centres, both for billiards and darts,” said Hinds.

The June 4 opening ceremony will feature special guests including mayor and council, both MLAs, Pam Alexis and Bob D’Eith, and MP Brad Vis.

Organizers are also hoping to have a representative of the Boswyk family to attend.

Isobel Mackenzie, B.C.’s Seniors’ Advocate will also attend.

“The seniors advocate is travelling the province for seniors’ week, this is the first real seniors week in the last three years, and Mission is her first stop in the province,” said Hinds.

After the opening ceremonies are completed, six days of Seniors’ Week activities begin.
