Sevenoaks Shopping Centre now has a rooftop beehive in place.
General manager Kristal Hambly said the beehive was placed on World Bee Day (May 20) as part of Sevenoaks’ commitment to improve environmental sustainability through the OnePlanet Initiative created by Morguard Investments Limited, which manages the shopping centre.
“The bees have a very important role as pollinators to contribute to the life cycle of plants. This includes the food that we eat such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and berries,” Hambly said.
”As the Fraser Valley is considered the top producer of these types of foods in British Columbia, we are contributing to sustainability and pollination right here in the Valley.”
The project is in collaboration with Alveole, a social beekeeping company, which has partnered with hundreds of companies and schools on beekeeping projects since 2013.

In conjunction with the project, Sevenoaks will have a bee display at centre court, where the public can learn about bees and take a selfie with the bee wall from May 26 to July 15.
Hambly said Sevenoaks already features a successful organics and recycling program, which has contributed to the diversion of waste in the following categories over the past year:
• 1,958 tree saves
• 3,630 kilograms of air pollutants prevented from being released
• 38 cubic metres of landfill space saved
• 2,504 litres of oil prevented from plastic recycling
• 19,673 kilowatt hours of energy prevented from glass and aluminum recycling
• more than three million litres of water saved from all paper sources
