The Mission Strong Youth Challenge was held last Saturday, drawing more than 75 youth to Centennial Park.

This was the sixth year for the annual fitness challenge in which youth test their strength in a series of obstacles placed throughout the park.

The obstacle course serves as a finale to the fitness challenge including Strong fitness classes that happened throughout October at the Mission Leisure Centre.

“It was so much fun and I feel so good about myself,” said participant Eveann Hanus, 10. “The log challenge was the most challenging. It was heavy, but I did it.”

The event includes activities such as riding mini bikes through a pre-charted parking lot course, balancing on a slack line suspended through the trees, crawling through the mud and wiggling through culvert tunnels.

“This truly is a community event,” said program coordinator Melissa Kendzierski.

“Every year we have so much support – from generous sponsors, including Ricardos Pizza and the Rotary Club, over 30 volunteers and 95 participants registered. It is a testament that Mission cares deeply about raising up healthy youth.”

The event wrapped up with pizza and a hot chocolate warmup as the final participants finished the course – just in time to escape the heavy rain.
