Biennale art show features Mission artists

The Mission Arts Centre has joined with other regional galleries to celebrate the first Fraser Valley Biennale, running July 5 to 23.

The Mission Arts Council has joined forces with The Reach Museum Gallery as well as the Kariton Gallery in Abbotsford, the Langley Arts Council and the Maple Ridge Art Gallery to hold simultaneous exhibitions.

The result is an inter-regional exhibition celebrating visual arts talent throughout the Fraser Valley. The galleries are all holding representative exhibitions following a juried submission process spearheaded by Scott Marsden, curator of The Reach.

Two featured artists from Mission are mixed media artist Brenna Maag, and photographer Laurie Mackie.

Some 128 artists submitted their work and relevant qualifications to a jury which included representatives from all participating galleries.

Wherever possible, the selected artists have been invited to show their work outside their home municipalities so that their work is given exposure to new audiences. The intention is to mount this show every two years — hence the name, biennale.

The art showings are Tuesday and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. until July 23 at the Mission Art Centre Gallery, 33529 First Ave.
