A Fraser Valley band made the most out of limited opportunities during the pandemic and some of the finished product was released Friday (Jan. 8).
Beach Moms, a folk-rock band with members from Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Mission, gathered over a weekend earlier this summer and created a self-titled EP to be released this spring. That EP’s first single, Shelby’s Kick Drum, has now been released on all major platforms.
The band is composed of Abbotsford natives Ryan McAllister (bass) and Brandt Fradette (electric guitar), Chilliwack’s Colin Herfst (drums) and Mission’s Jared Cropley (lead singer/acoustic guitar). They first started writing music in the winter of 2018 and have released two singles so far.
According to a press release from the band, their style is reminiscent of your dad’s favourite ‘80s hits and a splash of indie rock vibes.
The EP was recorded at McAllister’s Five Acres Studios near Abbotsford over three days.
“During a totally spontaneous soundcheck jam, we wrote Shelby’s Kick Drum,” stated Fradette in a press release. “Jared –our lead singer – was repetitively singing a catchy chorus. Colin, our band’s drummer, had his girlfriend Shelby visiting and she was sitting at the kick drum while I was on the piano. I could feel the excitement and energy with everyone in the room.
“It quickly turned into an all-handsp-on-deck sing-along. Within minutes everyone in the studio was in the tracking room singing along and playing any instrument they could get their hands on. The lyrics were inspired by summer romance and the carelessness of young love.”
